History
The antiquity of this tradition is attested by the Christian apologist Justin Martyr (c. 100 - 165), who noted in his Dialogue with Trypho that the Holy Family had taken refuge in a cave outside of town:
Joseph took up his quarters in a certain cave near the village; and while they were there Mary brought forth the Christ and placed Him in a manger, and here the Magi who came from Arabia found Him.(chapter LXXVIII).
Origen of Alexandria (185 ADa. 254) wrote:
In Bethlehem the cave is pointed out where He was born, and the manger in the cave where He was wrapped in swaddling clothes. And the rumor is in those places, and among foreigners of the Faith, that indeed Jesus was born in this cave who is worshipped and reverenced by the Christians. The first basilica on this site was begun by Saint Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine I. Under the supervision of Bishop Makarios of Jerusalem, the construction started in 327 and was completed in 333. That structure was burnt down in the Samaritan Revolt of 529 , drawing pencil sketches .
The current basilica was rebuilt in its present form in 565 by the Emperor Justinian I. When the Persians under Chosroes II invaded in 614, they unexpectedly did not destroy the structure. According to legend, their commander Shahrbaraz was moved by the depiction inside the church of the Three Magi wearing Persian clothing, and commanded that the building be spared. The Crusaders made further repairs and additions to the building during the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem with permission and help given by the Byzantine Emperor, and the first King of Jerusalem was crowned in the church. Over the years, the compound has been expanded, and today it covers approximately 12,000 square meters. The church was one of the direct causes for French involvement in the Crimean War against Russia , doorway curtain .
The church is administered jointly by Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Armenian Apostolic authorities. All three traditions maintain monastic communities on the site , jump rope mat .

Interior of the Church of the Nativity
The main Basilica of the Nativity is maintained by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem. It is designed like a typical Roman basilica, with five aisles (formed by Corinthian columns) and an apse in the eastern end, where the sanctuary is. The church features golden mosaics covering the side walls, which are now largely decayed. The basilica is entered through a very low door, called the "Door of Humility." The original Roman style floor has since been covered over, but there is a trap door in the modern floor which opens up to reveal a portion of the original mosaic floor. The church also features a large gilded iconostasis, and a complex array of lamps throughout the entire building. The wooden rafters were donated by King Edward IV of England. The same king also donated lead to cover the roof; however, this lead was later taken by the Turks, who melted it down for ammunition to use in war against Venice. Stairways on either side of the Sanctuary lead down by winding stairs to the Grotto.
The adjoining Church of St. Catherine, the Roman Catholic Church, was built in a more modern Gothic revival style, and has since been further modernized according to the liturgical trends which followed Vatican II. This is the church where the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem celebrates Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Certain customs still observed in this Midnight Mass predate Vatican II, but must be maintained because the "status quo" (the customs, rights and duties of the various church authorities that have custody of the Holy Places) was legally fixed by a firman in 1852, under the Ottoman Empire, that is still in force to this day.

The Bas-relief of the Tree of Jesse is a large work by well-known religious sculptor Czesaw Dwigaj which was recently incorporated into the Church of St. Catherine as a gift of Pope Benedict XVI during his trip to the Holy Land in 2009. Measuring in at 3 and a quarter meters wide and 4 meters in height, its corpus represents an olive tree figuring as the Tree of Jesse diplaying Christ's lineage from Abraham through St. Joseph along with other biblical motifs. Situated along the passage used by pilgrims making their way to the Grotto of the Nativity, the bas relief also incorporates symbolism from the Old Testament. The upper portion is dominated by a crowned figure of Christ the King in an open armed pose blessing the Earth. .
The Grotto of the Nativity, an underground cave located beneath the basilica, enshrines the site where Jesus is said to have been born. The exact spot is marked beneath an altar by a 14-pointed silver star set into the marble floor and surrounded by silver lamps. This altar is denominationally neutral, although it features primarily Armenian Apostolic influences. Another altar in the Grotto, which is maintained by the Roman Catholics, marks the site where traditionally Mary laid the newborn Baby in the manger.
Numerous Chapels are found in the compound as well, including the Chapel of Saint Joseph, commemorating the angel's appearance to Joseph, commanding him to flee to Egypt (Matthew 2:13); the Chapel of the Innocents, commemorating the children killed by Herod (Matthew 2:16-18); and the Chapel of Saint Jerome, where traditionally he translated the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate).
Manger Square, a large paved courtyard in front of the Church, is the site where crowds gather on Christmas Eve to sing Christmas carols in anticipation of the midnight services.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Armenian Apostolic Church follow the Julian Calendar liturgically, whereas the Roman Catholic Church follows the modern Gregorian Calendar. Thus Christmas Eve services for the Eastern and Western confessions will be held on different days. The Roman Catholic Exarch will celebrate the Nativity on December 25; the Orthodox Church will celebrate the Nativity on January 7.
2002 siege

From March to April 2002, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out peration Defensive Shield in the West Bank. As a part of these large-scale military operations, Bethlehem was advanced upon in what was declared as an effort to root out militants. On April 1, 2002, approximately 200 Palestinian militants took shelter in the church. The Israeli Army left only after the full evacuation of the Church of the Nativity on May 22.
Ban of Western leaders from entering
Father Pancratius, the parish priest residing at the Church of the Nativity, declared during the anti-war protest held in front of it on March 30, 2003, that George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Tony Blair and Jack Straw were banned from entering the Church of the Nativity forever. Referring to their role in the Iraq War, Father Pancratius described them as war criminals and child-killers, who would tarnish the Church if they entered it. The then spokesman of the Greek Orthodox Church of Jerusalem, Father Attallah Hanna, confirmed this decision, adding that the war in Iraq ndicates that leaders of the invading states did not listen to the church, and hence, we deem them excommunicates and perverted.2]

The basilica was placed on the 2008 Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites by the World Monuments Fund:
The present state of the church is worrying. Many roof timbers are rotting, and have not been replaced since the 19th century. The rainwater that seeps into the building not only accelerates the rotting of the wood and damages the structural integrity of the building, but also damages the 12th-century wall mosaics and paintings. The influx of water also means that there is an ever-present chance of an electrical fire. If another earthquake were to occur on the scale of the one of 1834, the result would most likely be catastrophic. ... It is hoped that the listing will encourage its preservation, including getting the three custodians of the church - the Greek Orthodox Church, the Armenian Orthodox Church, and the Franciscan order - to work together, which has not happened for hundreds of years. The Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority would also have to work together to protect it.

When the provisional president of Republic of China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, took the office in Guangzhou, an internal security unit was established to enforce military discipline among the troops loyal to the Republic of China Provisional Government. This unit was later renamed Military Police and would gradually expands and become present-day Republic of China Military Police. In 1925, under the supervision of then general Chiang Kai-shek, the military police was expanded from a single company to a full battalion, and was attached to the Northern Expedition Forces the next year. In the next ten years, the military police gradually expanded into several regiments, and was active in purging the communist elements within the Nationalist government. Xi'an Incident Main article: Xi'an Incident On December 12, 1936, while accompanying Chiang Kai-shek on an inspection trip to Xi'an, members of Military Police clashed with Zhang Xueliang's elite bodyguards when the latter were sent to arrest the generalissimo. The military police were caught off guard and out numbered, and were soon overpowered by Zhang's force, who later arrested Chiang and his entourage in what is later known as the Xi'an Incident. More than one hundred military police became casualties in the brief battle. However, to commemorate the heroic actions of the Military Police, Chiang ordered December 12 to be the Military Police Day. This holiday is no longer observed by the Republic of China government. World War Two and Civil War Military Police during the January 28 Incident. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Military Police troopers sometimes found themselves clashing with the Japanese despite the fact that they were neither properly trained nor equipped for such combat tasks. In the January 28 Incident and Battle of Nanjing in 1932 and 1937, the Military Police put up some fierce resistance against the Japanese forces, and suffered numerous casualties. The Military Police were also instrumental in operations behind Japanese line, and in time continued to expand under the direction of Chiang Kai-shek. Military Police were also active in keeping the influences of the communists at bay, and were successful at quelling an attempted insurrection by the communists in 1941. The last task of the Military Police in the war was to provide escort to the Japanese delegates to arrange the surrender. Full scale civil war broke out in 1946 between the Nationalists and the Communists; however, the Military Police were not as active in combat as they once were in the war against Japan. The Military Police were tasked to protect important governmental facilities from sabotages as well as political figures from assassinations. Furthermore, several Military Police regiments were involved in suppressing civil unrests in the newly acquired territories of Taiwan. The Military Police headquarters were moved to Taipei, Taiwan in 1950 following the defeat on mainland and evacuation to Taiwan. Taiwan In 1970, under the advice from the US Military Mission to the ROC, the ROC Armed Forces reorganized all their regiments into brigades. On 16 March 1970, the Military Police Command formed up four regional commands from the original military police regiments: 201st regional command from the 101st Military Police regiment for presidential guards, 202nd from the 201st MP regiment for capital garrison, 203rd from the 202nd MP regiment in Miaoli, and 204th from the 203rd MP regiment in Tainan City. In January 2006, all ten security battalions under the Republic of China Air Force were transferred to the Military Police Command. The increasing complexity of technological devices with stringent space requirements leads to imperfect boundary conditions that have to be properly accounted for. The push toward miniaturizing devices down to nanometer length scales imparts additional difficulties in measuring strains as the application of conventional extensometers and resistance foil gages are cumbersome, damaging, or even impossible. Compounding this problem is also the fact that compliance of small-scale testing machines precludes the use of the displacement of external actuators for estimating specimen strain. As a consequence, a technique with the following features is extremely desirable: i) no contact with the specimen required, ii) sufficient spatial resolution to measure locally at the region of interest, iii) the a bility to capture non-uniform full-field deformations, and iv) a direct measurement that does not require recourse to a numerical or analytical model. Optical methods are a logical solution to this litany of challenges. One approach is the interferometric strain/displacement gage (ISDG) developed by Sharpe., a laser-based technique that affords significant advantages over conventional strain measurement methods. ISDG utilizes two markers on the surface of the specimen that provide interference fringes that are analogous to Young two slit experiment, although in reflection as opposed to transmission. This technique offers superior resolution (as low as 5 ??) and local strain determination, but is limited to 1D measurements and requires some degree of experimental complexity. It also demands the use of markers, which have typically been either Vickers microhardness indents or patterned lines (applied by gas-assisted chemistries in the FIB or physical vapor deposition and photolithography). In the case of thin film mechanical testing where thicknesses are in the submicrometre range, hardness indents are out of the question and deposited lines can be up to an order of magnitude thicker than the specimen itself, which could significantly alter the apparent intrinsic properties of the material being tested. Digital image correlation (DIC) techniques have been increasing in popularity, especially in micro- and nano-scale mechanical testing applications due to its relative ease of implementation and use. Advances in digital imaging have been the enabling technology for this method and while white-light optics has been the predominate approach, DIC has recently been extended to SEM and AFM. Above and beyond the ability of image-based methods to provide a ox-seat to the events that are occurring during deformation, these techniques have been applied to the testing of many materials systems because it offers a full-field description and is relatively robust at tracking a wide range of arkers and varying surface contrast. The appeal of these image-based techniques, coupled with the lack of flexibility and prohibitive cost of commercial DIC software packages, provided the impetus for the development of a custom in-house software suite using the mathematical package MATLAB as the engine for calculations. This resulted in an open-source package that was uploaded to the public domain in an effort to provide free tools to users, but also to generate feedback for potential improvements and addition to the code. As such, a brief discussion of the primary features and methodology of this technique, along with some background on DIC and peak tracking will be presented here. DIC for strain measurement constitutes a major field of research and is followed by a healthy, vigorous, and dynamic discussion and discourse, so it is not the author intention to provide an exhaustive survey of the field. Instead, a more focused description of the tools required to make accurate measurements that provide insight on the deformation mechanisms that govern plasticity in nc-Al thin films is given. DIC was first conceived and developed at the University of South Carolina in the early 1980s and has been optimized and improved in recent years. DIC is predicated on the maximization of a correlation coefficient that is determined by examining pixel intensity array subsets on two or more corresponding images and extracting the deformation mapping function that relates the images (Figure 1). An iterative approach is used to minimize the 2D correlation coefficient by using nonlinear optimization techniques. Figure 1: Basic concept of DIC DIC has proven to be very effective at mapping deformation in macroscopic mechanical testing, where the application of specular markers (e.g. paint, toner powder) or surface finishes from machining and polishing provide the needed contrast to correlate images well. However, these methods for applying surface contrast do not extend to the application of freestanding thin films for several reasons. First, vapor deposition at normal temperatures on semiconductor grade substrates results in mirror-finish quality films with rms roughnesses that are typically on the order of several nanometers. No subsequent polishing or finishing steps are required, and unless electron imaging techniques are employed that can resolve microstructural features, the films do not possess enough useful surface contrast to adequately correlate images. Typically this challenge can be circumvented by applying paint that results in a random speckle pattern on the surface, although the large and turbulent f orces resulting from either spraying or applying paint to the surface of a freestanding thin film are too high and would break the specimens. In addition, the sizes of individual paint particles are on the order of ?ms, while the film thickness is only several hundred nms, which would be analogous to supporting a large boulder on a thin sheet of paper. Very recently, advances in pattern application and deposition at reduced length scales have exploited small-scale synthesis methods including nano-scale chemical surface restructuring and photolithography of computer-generated random specular patterns to produce suitable surface contrast for DIC. The application of very fine powder particles that electrostatically adhere to the surface of the specimen and can be digitally tracked is one approach. The Homer Laughlin China Company initially began as Laughlin Pottery in East Liverpool, Ohio. The company was started in 1871 by brothers Shakespeare and Homer Laughlin, however Shakespeare would later leave the company in 1879. In 1889, William Edwin Wells joined Homer and seven years later the two would incorporate. Homer would sell his interest to Wells shortly thereafter. The firm experienced rapid growth and opened a facility in Newell, West Virginia in 1903. By the late 1920s all production was centered at the West Virginia factory and the Ohio site was abandoned. Dinnerware lines The retailing floor at the company's factory outlet store. In the 1920s the firm advertised itself as the largest pottery company in the world. Estimates of production range from 25,000 to 35,000 different patterns over the century plus. Homer Laughlin began producing the popular and colorful Fiesta line in 1936. In addition to Fiesta, two other lines of colorful dinnerware in bright, solid-colored glazes were introduced in the 1930s. Harlequin was introduced in 1938 as a less expensive alternative to Fiesta available at Woolworth's stores. They also produced Riviera dinnerware, which is distinctive for its triple-scalloped edges. Riviera was available red, yellow, light green and mauve blue, ivory and occasionally cobalt blue. Production of Riviera ceased in the late 1940s. He began designing athletic shoes professionally in 1996 upon graduation from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. His first year of athletic shoe designing was for Fila and he was a designer in the cross training category having designed the first models for New York Yankee, Derek Jeter. In 1997, Puma AG contacted Dorn to lead a team of designers in SoHo, New York. Dorn designed and developed both performance and fashion running collections as well as designing concept collections with Ciano Farmer in a joint collaboration that resulted in the duo premiering on the television program, 60 Minutes, in March 2000. Dorn presented visions for the new millennium for the basketball line, "The Cage", with Farmer and was later invited to design boot concepts for Regency's new film, X-Men, for Arnon Milchan. Dorn moved to Brazil in 2001 and began to work with sports brand, Olympikus, designing their adventure footwear collections. In 2003, Puma AG contacted Dorn to work on the Complete Running Series. He designed various performance models for Puma and ultimately designed the innovative Olympic track suit uniforms that the Jamaican women's Olympic relay team wore at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. With his creation of the New Level Design studio in 2003, Dorn was able to design and develop over 50 new athletic shoes, technology concepts, logos, and apparel collections for the brands Umbro, Kappa, Fila and Tryon from 2004-06. The Brazilian beach soccer team wore the Dorn designed uniforms by Umbro in 2004. In 2006, the first of Dorn's footwear technologies was launched by Kappa, Kappapult, and the apparel technology, BodyAC. Umbro then launched their indoor soccer technology, Centipax, that was inspired from the segmented body of a centipede. Umbro then went on to launch their premium technology, SC3, that Dorn calls Skin Concept 3. This concept was inspired from human skin with its three layers and boasts maximum comfort, flexibility, stability and propulsion. Tryon's "Adventure" Series lines also debuted at the international footwear trade show, Couro Moda, in S?o Paulo, Brazil, 2005. Kildare Brazil worked closely with Dorn to redesign their corporate logo and brand i dentity in 2006. Composite Dry Type Wall Bushing Insulator , Composite Dry Type Wall Bushing Insulator El Campo Santo is a cemetery located at the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum, 15415 East Don Julian Road, in City of Industry, California. As one of the oldest private cemeteries in Southern California, El Campo Santo contains the remains of the pioneering Workman-Temple family as well as P Pico, the last governor of Alta California, and other prominent pioneer families. Within its low brick walls, the one-half acre cemetery features a Neoclassical mausoleum and a small cemetery plot surrounded by a Gothic Revival cast-iron fence. In the early 1850s, the family of William 'Don Julian' Workman (1799-1867) established El Campo Santo, or "the sacred ground," as a cemetery solely for the use of their family. Along with a cemetery plot enclosed by an ornate cast-iron fence, they built a Gothic Revival brick chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas by Bishop Thaddeus Amat of Los Angeles. Among the first to be buried here was William Workman's brother David Workman (1797 - 1855), who was killed in an accident while driving cattle to the gold fields in Northern California. At the turn of the century, the cemetery was abandoned and its brick chapel destroyed by fire. Walter P. Temple, a grandson of the Workmans, successfully filed a lawsuit preventing any further desecration of the cemetery. In 1917, he was able to purchase the cemetery and the surrounding 75acres (300,000m2) and began restoration. In place of the chapel, however, he built a cast stone Neoclassical mausoleum and moved the remains of his family inside. In 1921, he also transferred the remains of P Pico and his wife, Ygnacia Alvarado de Pico, from old Calvary Cemetery on North Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles, which was being relocated, and had them entombed in the mausoleum. The Workman Home and Family Cemetery are designated California Historical Landmark No. 874. The cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, No. 145, on November 20, 1974. El Campo Santo is open to visitors through a self-guided tour described in the free brochure available at the museum office. Plot The boys play a gig in a club to just a handful of people. After the gig when Bret and Jemaine are at the bar, a "semi-professional" actor named Ben introduces himself. He thinks they are a comedy act and that Bret and Jemaine are just playing characters. He offers them his card expressing a wish to work with them in the future. At a post show debriefing Murray gets depressed about the lack of success he has had promoting the band to record companies. Bret and Jemaine visit Ben at the dry cleaners where he works. They ask him to call Murray posing as a record company executive and let him down gently. Ben calls Murray posing as "Stefan Gucci", but after Murray starts begging and crying, he breaks down and agrees to give the band a record deal. Murray and the boys go to dinner with "Stefan Gucci". Despite Jemaine's attempts to get them out of the mess, Murray and Bret agree to the two million dollar deal that the carried away Ben offers them. Following the filming of a Lord of the Rings-themed music video, the boys try to tell Murray about the mistake, but his excited mood causes them to postpone the bad news. They finally get around to telling him the following night after Murray throws them an expensive wrap party. A fuming Murray storms off. Bret and Jemaine visit Ben again to discuss the mess. He gives them an I.O.U. for the money Murray has spent. He tells them he will be able to pay them back soon because he has got a part in a Martin Scorsese movie about a dry cleaner, but they don't believe him. They visit Murray at his office and make up with him. They even manage to cheer him up a little. During the credits, we see Ben playing a scene with John Turturro in the aforementioned film, titled Dry Cleaner. Notes David Costabile (Doug) is listed in the credits but does not actually appear in the episode, except perhaps as the unseen driver of Mel's car. In the opening nightclub scene, Bret is wearing a t-shirt made from the picture of Sally he embroidered for her in the "Sally Returns" episode. Although Mel officially quit the fan club in the previous episode, "New Fans", she is back again at the beginning of this episode. The basic plot of this episode was previously used in the second episode of the Flight of the Conchords radio series. Songs The following songs were featured in this episode: "Cheer Up, Murray" Bret and Jemaine sing "Cheer Up, Murray" to Murray after the disappointing concert. They attempt to cheer him up by describing all the good things in his life, although they can't help slipping in some not-so-good things as well. The scene takes place in the store room of the night club. During the song we see a number of short sequences featuring aspects of Murray's life depicted through animated pictures in a photo album. "Frodo" In a park, the guys film a music video parodying The Lord of the Rings. The lyrics summarise the story from the first film and the end of the third film. Greg acts as cameraman whilst Bret plays both Frodo and Legolas, Jemaine plays Sam and Gimli, Murray plays Gandalf, Mel plays Arwen, Eugene plays Saruman and Dave plays Aragorn. "Frodo" (a.k.a. "Frodo, Don't Wear the Ring") is sung in a mix of styles including folk, heavy metal and rap. The song sounds similar to the Led Zeppelin song, "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You". Cultural references This episode features a prominent reference to The Lord of the Rings movies, which were all filmed in New Zealand and featured Bret in a small role. Despite only charting at number 29, in the UK, the song has remained successful and is played on the KISS network daily. Music video Rita G in the infamous first music video. The music video for "Flashing Lights" was co-directed by Spike Jonze along with West himself and produced by Jonathan Becker and Joshua Greenberg of Bucks Boys Productions. Filmed entirely in slow-motion, the video begins with a Ford Mustang Bullit rolling onto the screen and stopping at dusk in the desert outside Las Vegas, Nevada. As the bright, red taillights turn off, the song breaks into its titular refrain and Houston-based Playboy model Rita G exits the vehicle dressed in a wig, fur coat and large black sunglasses. Walking a distance away from the car, she strips down to her lingerie and lights her clothes on fire. As she walks back towards the car with flames at her back, West's vocals begin. Kanye himself finally makes his appearance when the woman opens the trunk to reveal him lying in it tied up and gagged. Though it received much airplay, the video for "Flashing Lights" stands as one of West's most controversial music videos. Frustrated, Bunk and Freamon lose their temper with the ship's lone black seaman (whom Bunk calls Kunta Kinte). The first mate is more forthcoming and admits that many of the crew asked for pay advances during the trip. He believed that they may have been gambling, but Bunk thinks that they may have been spending it on the girls. He shows them the cabin and possessions of two crew members who jumped ship. He tells them that the crew members will speak English again but not in the police's presence. Furthermore he convinces Bunk and Freamon that if they bring in a translator, nothing will be said as the crew generally agrees not to inform on each other as what happens below decks stays below decks. They then agree to let the ship go with little evidence and jurisdiction for interrogation. The detectives later report back to Sergeant Landsman at the homicide unit. He berates them for letting the boat go. He asks Officer Russell about her status and tells her that she can wear plain clothes while she is detailed to the case. Later, Bunk and Russell try to trace the movements of the container that the bodies were found in and find that most of the paperwork has been falsified. Officer McNulty visits the morgue and discusses the case with Frazier, the medical examiner. He learns that three of the girls received breast implants in Budapest and that many of them had intercourse while on the ship. He visits the homicide unit with this information but Russell, Freamon and Bunk have matched his deduction and come up with the same theory and shatter McNulty's pride by beating him to everything he was about to say. McNulty and Russell agree that they do not want to see the girls unidentified and shipped out as medical cadavers. Bunk, Russell and Freamon take the French addresses listed on the paperwork to the FBI, who confirm that they are false and give the detectives more information on the international vice trade. Later, McNulty joins Bunk and Russell in a bar. McNulty asks Russell about her children and learns that she is a single mother. They discuss their progress in the case and McNulty tells Bunk of his desire to put a name to the dead girl he pulled from the harbour. Sobotka detail Major Valchek is informed of his missing surveillance van by a sergeant. It is seen being delivered to stevedores in Wilmington. Prez is annoyed that his commander in the detail will not authorise telephone monitoring on their target, Frank Sobotka, and that their investigation appears to have gotten a false start. Later at Valchek anniversary party, Prez tells him that the detail will move slowly under Lt. Grayson and that Lieutenant Daniels would have brought in a better case on the Barksdale detail if it had not been for the interference of acting commissioner Burrell. Valchek is prompted to visit the detail offices when he receives photos of the missing surveillance van. He finds the detectives playing poker and the lieutenant missing. Enraged, Valchek tracks Burrell to a fundraiser where he is awaiting the vote as police commissioner. Valchek regards the detectives that he has been sent "a detail of humps." Burrell attempts to quiet Valchek down who then claims he'll tell the first district to vote against his nomination for commissioner in addition to other politicians he knows. Valchek then claims Burrell's quest to become commissioner will be made uglier than he wishes for it to be unless he complies with his request for a real police detail. He then forces Burrell into assigning Daniels to the Sobotka detail claiming he can make Burrell's life hell with all of his city hall connections for non-compliance. Omar's crew Omar Little is back in town with a new boyfriend named Dante in tow. They stake out a stash house to potentially rip off. They are beaten to the take by Tosha Mitchell and Kimmy, fellow thieves. Omar tails them to their hideout and announces his return to Baltimore, taking their haul from them. An interesting fact is that these lamp models survived for two decades before being replaced with newer, but (as reported by independent specialists in the field of lighting) inferior street lamps, produced by Hit Lighting - Bulgaria. Svetlina's lanterns are bigger and heavier than the Hit Lighting ones. However, they also have bigger refractors, thus spreading light more efficiently. In addition they have an original design, whether the lanterns of Hit Lighting look very similar to the current lanterns of other manufacturers, e.g. General Electric and Technosvet. The \y Passenger depot of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway at Milwaukee, Wis., plans for which were Published in the issue of the Railway Review of Dec. 25, 1886, and in the issue of the Scientific American (Architects and Builders' Edition) of March, 1887, is a large terminal side-station, described as follows in the publications mentioned:The new passenger station of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway at Milwaukee is situated between Third and Fourth Streets, one and one-half blocks from Grand Avenue, and fronts on a park on Everett Street. The ground-plan of the building shows a surface of 120 x 65 ft.There are three floors the first 16 ft. in the clear and the other two 14 ft. each. In the centre of the facade rises a tower to the height of 160 ft., reminding one in its graceful lines of some Venetian campanile, and dominating the landscape in every direction. The style of the structure is modern Gothic. The foundations are solid and enduring, being constructed of stone, with granite facings above grade. The material used in the construction of the walls is Milwaukee brick, faced with pressed Philadelphia red brick. The trimmings are of red sandstone and terra-cotta in handsome patterns. The main entrance of the building is formed of a triple arch, supported by columns of polished granite.It is reached by a flight of six easy steps. The swinging-doors of polished oak are a few feet 1ns1de the arch, being surmounted by stained-glass windows in beautiful designs. These admit the visitor into the large central hall which bisects the building. This is 30 x 65 ft. The floor is of tile, in a well-defined pattern, and soft, pleasing colors. The walls are of red brick up to the spring of the arch. From there on they are in a soft, creamy brick. The lower portion of the wall is marked with geometrical patterns in d1fferent- colored brick, whi le the creamy surface above is picked out here and there with a dash of dark color.Around the rear of the hall runs a gallery, which serves to give the light and lightness needed to the whole. This gallery is surrounded by a railing in hammered dull brass. On the right of the main entrance is the ladies' waiting-room, an apartment of handsome proportions, 30 x 84 ft., with tile floor, and finished in oak in natural color. To the rear of the apartment are well- appointed toilet-rooms. On the same side of the hall, and occupying the south side of the building, is the gentlemen's waiting-room, of the same size as the other room, less a slight abridgment in length.Between the two is a bijou ticket-office with three ticket-windows, one to the hall and one to each waiting-room. All these rooms, as well, in (act, as all the rooms down-stairs, with one exception, are finished in a similar manner to the ladies' room, and have tiled floors. The ceiling on this floor throughout is ribb ed by heavy beams, whose possible heaviness is relieved by tinting in light color approaching a soft shade of Nile green.On the left of the entrance is the dining-room of the hotel connected with the depot, a room 40 x 52 ft., finished as the other rooms, but with a wood floor. The lunch room, on the same side, is 16x 52 ft. in size, and is furnished with folding-stools for the benefit of its patrons. This, in the west end of the building, is occupied by the train-despatchers of the different divisions, and it is safe to say that never before did train-despatchers have more comfortable or beautiful quarters. The most of the offices look directly out on the park. The east end of the building is occupied, with the exception of one room, for hotel purposes. Descending to the first floor, in the e xtreme west end of the building, is found the baggage-room, an apartment 52 x 56 ft. in its floor dimensions. Immediately above it and reached by a water-elevator is a room of similar size for the purpose of storing baggage not called for immediately. In the east end of the building is the emigrant room, of size the same as the baggage-room, with heavily timbered ceiling and tiled floor. This room and the one above it, also intended for the same purpose, are well appointed for their special object. The building is lighted throughout by electricity and heated by steam, both being furnished by boilers and engine located in the east end of the basement.Outside are large car-sheds, 600 ft. in length and 100 in width, supported by iron columns and girders, and roofed with corrugated iron. They cover five tracks, on which the highest skill of the road-masters' art has been displayed. There is placed in the tower, at a height that will make it easily seen from a good part of the ci ty, a big clock, the dials of which will at night be illuminated by electricity. The CUCVs were an attempt by the U.S. military to use COTS (commercial, off-the-shelf) vehicles with minor modifications in non-combat roles. They were intended to replace the M37 Cargo Trucks and the M715 Cargo Trucks and related variants. Around 1973, Dodge began developing the M880 series trucks, which were militarized adaptations of their current model 4x4s. These trucks weren known as CUCVs at the time, but were in use for many years. They had two failings, a gasoline powerplant and 12-volt electrical systems. The electrical system was addressed by upgrades where needed, but the gasoline engine was a fatal flaw to a military increasingly going diesel. Around 44,000 were produced during the 1976 and 1977 model years, serving until the early 1990s. An armoured variant was built by Cadillac Gage as the Ranger. General Motors A Lithuanian Army M1008 CUCV Pickup The GM CUCV's were produced in the 1984-86 time period (mostly 1984) and were powered by 6.2L Detroit Diesel V8 engine. The GM CUCVs were assembled mostly from the heaviest duty bits and pieces from the light commercial truck lines. The CUCVs came in three basic body styles, a pickup, a utility and an ambulance body. A chassis cab fitted with a service body could be called a fourth. They were given numbers and the trucks were all rated as 1-1/4 ton (commonly called a ive-quarter), even though some of them had payloads in excess of that. The M1008 was the basic 5/4 cargo truck, the M1010 was the ambulance and the M1009 3/4 ton utility rig, which was a stripped Blazer uprated to 3/4-ton capacity. In the truck lines there were some heavy duty variants, to include the M1028, M1028A1, M1028A2 and M1028A3 shelter carriers, the shelter being a mobile command or communications enclosure. The M1031 was the chassis cab which was most commonly found in the two door version. These latte r trucks were all rated for heavier 3,600 or 3,900 pound loads, vs. the M1008s 2,900 pound load capacity. The M1028A2 and A3 models had dual rear wheel axles (Dana 70 axle) and are uncommon. All the CUCVs were powered by GM 6.2L J-series Detroit Diesel V8 engine non-emissions diesel. These were rated at 135hp (101kW) and 240lbt (325N), which was 5hp (3.7kW) more than the emissions gasoline engine of the time. They were all equipped with the TH-400 automatic. All but the M1028A1 and M1031 used a heavy duty version of the NP-208 chain drive transfer case. The M1028A1 and M1031 units had a slip-yoke rear output version of the NP-205, which was specified mainly for its PTO capacity. The M1009 Blazer used a standard 10-bolt front axle, but had a 10-bolt in back with an Eaton Locker (ov-Lok) and 3.08:1 gears. The trucks all used open Dana 60 front axles, with the M1028 and M1031 series rigs having a Trac-Lok limited slip. In the rear, the M1008s used the beefy GM 10.5-inch (270mm) 14-bolt rear axle with No-Spin lockers (the commercial trade name for the Detroit Locker). Axle ratios were 4.56:1, though the duallies are reputed to have had 4.88:1. As with other military vehicles, the CUCVs used a 24-volt electrical system. It was actually a hybrid 12/24-volt system that used 24-volts under the hood, complete with dual 100 amp alternators, the mandatory NATO slave receptacle for jump starting any NATO vehicle, and hookups for military radios. The rest of the truck was 12-volt. GM produced some 70,000 from 1983 to 1986 most for the military. For the past several years, GM Defense has been working over the newest GM trucks as CUCV-II and CUCV-III units for a new generation. The older Dodge M880s were used on the battlefield in some of the brush wars of the early 1980s and the results were reported to be isastrous. Likewise, the GM CUCVs saw combat time in Desert Storm and as one unit commander said, the results were ess than desirable. As a result most CUCV's were replaced by the same HMMWV's they were to augment. The GM CUCV may not have made the grade as a battlefield vehicle, but it served well in its original role as a dollar-saving bridge between out-and-out tactical vehicles and dedicated civilian vehicles. Like the rear echelon human troops, they provided support for the major goals of the military, namely to project a mighty frontline tactical fist wherever needed. There are still many CUCVs wearing green but there are also many that have passed through the surplus gates into civilian life. CUCV M1008 - Basic General Motors Model K30903. The M1008 was the most numerous of the CUCV truck types. It was often seen with troop seats for eight in the bed. Some of the unique accoutrements to a CUCV are the military brush bars and tow hooks front and rear, as well as a pintle hitch. Contributions Rubber Sekhar served the natural rubber industry for about 50 years in various capacities. He was the first Asian Director of the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia in 1966 and, subsequently, become the first Asian Controller of Rubber Research and chairman of the Malaysian Rubber Research and Development Board. Under his leadership, the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRIM), Tun Abdul Razak Rubber Research Centre (TARRC) in Hertford, Britain, and the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) rose to great heights and gained international recognition for excellence in research, modernisation of the rubber industry and the vigorous promotion and expansion of rubber usage. He was actively involved in the formation of the Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute and evolved the Malaysian Rubber Development Corporation from a desk in his division to what it finally became. His efforts in setting up central processing units throughout the country and spearheading small holder support and development systems lead to their achieving impressive levels of performance and viability, while contributing substantively to the nation's economy. Sekhar also oversaw the development of stimulants to paint on rubber trees to double and in many cases triple latex yields. He was directly involved in the invention and subsequent development of the Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) process whose final product allowed for grading to buyers specifications to a very high level of consistency. This was one of its most significant developments as an industrial raw material. With numerous patents to his name some of his more recent innovations were in the areas of rubber recycling (Delink), low protein latex and rubberised textiles. Palm Oil He was also instrumental in setting up the Palm Oil Research Institute of Malaysia and was its founder and Chairman. Sekhar established Porim as one of the premier centers for oils and fats research in the world. Plantation Workers Sekhar was a tireless champion for the rights of Malaysian plantation workers and their progeny, mostly ethnic Indians, and made it an important part of his life's work to make sure that they received a monthly wage and due recognition from the government for their contributions to the economy of the nation. Awards and Recognitions As one of Asia most effective scientists, Sekhar received the 1973 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service and many other awards, local and international, for his efforts. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) and Government of Malaysia, in recognition of his excellent service to the nation, bestowed upon him the title of 'Tan Sri'. A new School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews will be named in his honour, after the sizeable sum of ?8.25m towards building costs was donated by his son, Malaysian entrepreneur Vinod Sekhar. Family Sekhar was married to Puan Sri Sukumari Shekhar. He had four children and 8 grandchildren. Death Tan Sri B.C Shekar died of a heart attack on September 6, 2006 at the Kalayappa Hospital in Chennai, India at 9am (5am India time). He was 77. In astronomy, an asterism is a pattern of stars seen in Earth's sky which is not an official constellation. Like constellations, they are composed of stars which, while they are in the same general direction, are not physically related, often being at significantly different distances from Earth. An asterism may be composed of stars from one or more constellations. Their mostly simple shapes and few stars make these patterns easy to identify, and thus particularly useful to those just learning to orient themselves when viewing the night sky. The grouping of stars into constellations is essentially arbitrary, and different cultures have had different constellations, although a few of the more obvious ones tend to recur frequently, e.g., Orion and Scorpius. Historically, without an "official" list, there was really no difference between a constellation and an asterism. Anyone could arrange and name a grouping which might or might not be generally accepted. Still, some of our own constellations go back at least as far as the Sumerians. Our current list is based on that of the Greco-Roman astronomer, Claudius Ptolemy of Alexandria (c 85 165). His list of 48 constellations was accepted as the standard for 1800 years. As constellations were considered to be composed only of the stars that constituted the figure, it was always possible to use the left over, non-figure ("amorphic") stars to create and squeeze in a new grouping among the established constellations. Two astronomers particularly known for attempting to expand Ptolemy's catalogue were Johann Bayer (15721625) and Nicolas Louis de Lacaille (17131762). Bayer listed a dozen figures that had been suggested since Ptolemy's day; Lacaille created new groups, mostly for the area near the South Celestial Pole, unobserved by the ancients. Many of their proposed constellations have been accepted, the rest remaining asterisms, mostly obsolete. Clarification was necessary to determine which groupings are constellations and which stars belonged to them. The situat ion was finally regularized in 1930 when the International Astronomical Union (IAU) divided the sky into 88 official constellations with precise boundaries. Any other grouping is an asterism. Points to bear in mind The seasons indicated here are for the Northern Hemisphere. For the Southern Hemisphere, substitute the opposite season. The smaller the number of a star's magnitude, the brighter it is. Thus those of the 1st magnitude are brighter than those of the 2nd. Even negative magnitudes are possible, and the few so rated, though still called "first" magnitude, are the very brightest. A true star cluster (see below), whose stars are gravitationally related, is not an asterism. Large seasonal asterisms This section does not cite any references or sources. (February 2009) By happenstance, in each of the four seasons there is a large asterism visible near midnight. Their component stars are bright and mark out simple geometric shapes. Spring is marked by the Diamond of Virgo consisting of Arcturus, Spica, Denebola, and Cor Caroli. An East-West line from Arcturus to Denebola forms an equilateral triangle with Cor Caroli to the North (Spring Triangle), and another with Spica to the South. Together these two triangles form the Diamond. Stretching from 38 to 11, the Diamond is too large to be seen all at once. Formally, the stars of the Diamond are located in the constellations Bo?tes, Virgo, Leo, and Canes Venatici. The Summer Triangle of Deneb, Altair, and Vega ? Cygni, ? Aquilae, and ? Lyrae is easily recognized as its three stars are all of the 1st magnitude. The stars of the Triangle are located in the band of the Milky Way which marks the galactic equator. The Great Square of Pegasus is the quadrilateral formed by the stars ? Pegasi, ? Pegasi, ? Pegasi, and ? Andromedae, representing the body of the winged horse. The Port of Ashdod remains one of the few deep water ports in the world to be built on the open sea, and its construction involved great engineering challenges. The decision on the location and construction of the port was preceded by a maritime and climatic survey which confirmed the engineering feasibility of its construction. The physical design began in 1957-1958, a critical time, both from the point of view of the development of maritime transport and port facilities for cargo handling, and from the point of view of the development of cargo vessels. In addition, plans also include the construction and development of cargo storage areas, operational and service structures for employees, electrical and communications networks, a modern gate complex, access roads to the local and national traffic network and a railway terminal. General cargo Most of the work is carried out on six conventional piers which handle such cargoes as agricultural exports, citrus fruit, timber, metals, pelletized cargo, sling cargo, bulk cargo in grabs, etc. These piers can handle all types of ships of up to 30,000 tons. Pier no. 5 has been deepened and fitted to work Panamax type ships of up to 60,000 tons deadweight. The piers are outfitted with excellent equipment for efficient working. There are also 4 berths for Roll On/Roll Off ships, one of them on the container pier. Storage The port's storage space totals about 500,000 m2. Of these, 50,000 m2 are covered, for general cargo storage. There is also a special shed for storing hazardous materials, chemicals, etc. which may not be stored in enclosed spaces or open areas. Coal pier In the second half of 1990 the first generating unit in the new power station at Zikim, near Ashkelon, went into operation, fired by coal imported through the Port of Ashdod. The port has the necessary facilities for moving the incoming coal from the coal pier to the coal storage yard in the rear of the port, east of the Ashdod power station. There it is loaded on rail freight cars for transport to the power station at Zikim. In 1988 the building of pier 9 was completed, which made possible the unloading of 2.5 million tons coal per year. In August 1989, the building of a conveyor, which transports coal from pier 9 to the coal yard, was completed, and with it the Port of Ashdod's preparation for the "coal age" was concluded on schedule. In September 1989, the 120,000 ton collier M.S. Leon entered port with 85,000 tons of coal. The coal was unloaded by crane unto the conveyor and taken to the Coal Company at the rear of the Ashdod power station. The big ship was brought into port by modern Voit-Schneider type tugboats, which have an exceptional maneuverability and a bollard pull of 35 and 45 tons respectively. Bringing 160,00 G.R.T. ships into the port (at partial load capacity) is a considerable accomplishment in view of the fact that the Port of Ashdod was planned for navigation by ships of maximum deadweight of 30,000 tons. Bulk cargo in transit Bulk handling The specialized minerals handling pier was opened in 1967. In 1979 more modern systems were added to the old ones. All are computer controlled. The bulk installations can store 240,000 tons of phosphates (in 10 separate categories) and 140,000 tons of potash (separated in 5 categories). The minerals arrive in the port in special railcars and trucks. Their discharge into the stores is carried out by conveyor systems and heaping machinery, at a rate of 800 to 1,500 tons per hour. The loading onto ships is carried out by two loaders, one at a rate of 800 tons per hour and the other at 1,600 tons per hour. Another loader is to be installed shortly to speed the operation. The potash loading ships anchor at the dolphins, where the water's depth is 12.5 meters, allowing the mooring of Panamax ships of up to 225 meters in length and 60,000 tons capacity. History In 1849, Adelicia Hayes Franklin married Joseph Alexander Smith Acklen, a young attorney from Alabama, and they immediately began construction of Belle Monte (Belmont) on 180acres (0.73km2) in Davidson County. It was completed by 1853 as an Italian villa style summer home. Adelicia and Joseph used Belmont as a summer home to escape from the heat of Adelicia's seven Louisiana cotton plantations, which totaled 8,600acres (35km2). The Acklens built, furnished, and landscaped one of the most elaborate antebellum homes in the South, totaling 36 rooms and 19,000sqft (1,800m2). The south wing of the guest house contained guestrooms and a bowling alley. The art gallery had a corrugated glass roof and comprised the north wing. The grounds also included lavish gardens, conservatories, aviary, lake and a zoo. The conservatories hous ed tropical fruit and flowers along with camellia japonica, jasmine, liles, and cacti. The zoo featured bears, monkeys, peacocks, singing birds, a white owl, alligators from Louisiana and a deer park. Covered balconies with cast iron railing and trim surrounded the house to protect windows from the sun. Atop the house, a ten-foot octagonal cupola vented the house during the summer months and provided an "astronomical observatory" used for viewing the stars, the estate and downtown Nashville. The fixer removes the unexposed silver halide remaining on the Photographic film or photographic paper, leaving behind the reduced metallic silver that forms the image, making it insensitive to further action by light. In chromogenic films, the remaining metallic silver must be removed by solution in a chemical called a bleach fix or blix, which contains a mixture of ammonium thiosulfate and ferrous EDTA, a powerful chelating agent. Washing A disadvantage of the use of thiosulfate as a fixer is its ability to dissolve elemental silver at a very slow rate. If films or papers are inadequately washed after fixing, any residual fixer can slowly bleach or stain the photographic image. For prints on high grade fibre papers, a period of continuous washing in clean, cold water for up to 40 minutes may be required. For modern plastic (resin) coated papers, washing for as little as 2 minutes in warm water can be sufficient to eliminate residual fixer.
